McCarty's Taste of Eden

Owners: Beth McCarty, and her son, Matthew McCarty.

McCarty’s Taste of Eden strives to provide customers with a local, quality product. Our goal is to provide nutritious food to consumers while also improving the quality of the environment that it is produced in. Chickens are rotated around the pasture, as are the cattle to help enrich the soil without the need of commercial fertilizers. This also helps reduce weed populations and increase the quality of forage thus increasing the healthiness of our livestock.

The business was started by Beth in 2003 selling home grown vegetables and jams/jellies made from home grown fruit at a local farmers market. In 2007, eggs and chicken were added to the mix when Matthew started raising chickens for a high school FFA project. The two sell over 1,000 dozen eggs a year.

Beginning in 2013, McCarty’s Taste of Eden started raising the meat chickens solely on Non-GMO feed. The chicks spend their first three (3) weeks of life in a secure, heated facility and are then moved outside to large pens in a pasture. The pens are moved daily to fresh grass. Feed and water is also replenished multiple times during the day.

McCarty’s Taste of Eden also raises grass-fed beef. We are currently in the process of expanding the cattle business to the point that in the future all calves will be born and raised on the farm. Thus having even more control over the care and quality of the product they sell.

Beth and Matthew decided on the current name for the farm business in 2010. It is derived from their last name and the fact that all of the vegetables, eggs and meat are raised in Eden Township, thus truly a taste of Eden.

You can purchase McCarty’s Taste of Eden chicken at Harvest @The Woodward on South Main Street in Mount Vernon, Ohio. We also sell beef, chicken, eggs, and seasonal produce at the Granville Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in Granville, Ohio. You can even call ahead and pick up right at the farm!

The first 2018 Granville Farmers' Market will be Saturday, May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We will be setup in our normal spot. Due to family illness, we will not be selling eggs at the current time.

This steer was born on 3/13 between 2 pm and 5:30 pm. I am calling him Houdini because, as you can see in the first picture, he is on the wrong side of the pasture fence. Robert shoved him under to his mother after we tagged and banded him.

Wednesday morning two more calves were born. Both females. I think I will name one Artemis and one Selene.

First new calf of 2018 was delivered March 4. It is a heifer. I think we will call her Flora, the Roman goddess of spring.

Today was the last day of the winter farm market in Granville. To all of our customers who braved the cold, thank you for making the last market a great day.
