Founded in 1839, the Akron Beacon Journal is a daily newspaper that serves readers in Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne counties. The Beacon Journal is active in founding and supporting organizations, programs and events that promote the well-being of the Greater Akron community. These include the Millennium Fund for Children, First Night Akron, the Coming Together Project, Summit Education Initiative, United Way and Harvest for Hunger. The Beacon Journal and are owned by Sound Publishing Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of Black Press Ltd., which owns and operates over 100 newspapers in western Canada, Washington state and Hawaii.
