On July 18, 1826, 191 years ago today, Pope Leo XII issued a papal bull dividing the Louisiana Territory of the United States of America into different dioceses, thereby establishing what was then the Diocese of St. Louis with Bishop Joseph Rosati as the ordinary over this vast expanse.
