Four generations of the D’Amico family have grown mushrooms in southeastern Pennsylvania. Joseph A. D’Amico began growing mushrooms in 1932 after purchasing a stone quarry in Avondale, PA that came with a small mushroom farm that could produce 50,000 pounds annually. He focused his efforts on the fresh market during a time where other mushroom growers were predominantly selling to canneries, and in doing so carved out a niche for the small farm. Second generation, Anthony J. D’Amico took over the farm in 1955 and expanded the operation with a focus on quality for the fresh market, shipping product to 28 states in the eastern United States, producing approximately 500,000 pounds a year. Joseph J. D’Amico started with the family business in 1974 and in 1980 established To-Jo Mushrooms to pack and distribute fresh mushrooms, named after his two sons Tony and Joe. For two decades he grew the business and in 1994 saw the need for value-added mushroom products. The result was the founding of To-Jo Food Products which offered national distribution of value-added mushrooms in a variety of cuts and styles.
Today, his sons Tony and Joe run the family business. They have grown To-Jo even further, introducing new products and sustainable programs that retailers and consumers are responding to. The company is diversified into four business operations: To-Jo Fresh distributes white, brown, and specialty mushrooms in foodservice and retail packs under To-Jo and other brands; Brownstone Mushrooms is the growing operation; To-Jo Transportation manages logistics with the company-owned truck and trailer fleet ; and To-Jo Food Products manufactures value-added mushroom products for foodservice and retail customers under the Back of the House, Nita’s Nicest and To-Jo brands. To-Jo is now one of the largest fresh mushroom producers in the and offers over 200 fresh items to meet consumer demand as well as an extensive line of processed products.
The company’s headquarters are located in Avondale, PA. enabling delivery of its product within 24 hours of harvest to many of its regional customers.
In more recent news, the company’s mushrooms received numerous awards at the 2014 Pennsylvania Farm Show which included the coveted award “Best Overall Mushrooms”. Growth and expansion have been central to To-Jo throughout its history; and will continue to be a primary focus as the company moves into the future.
