The Hidden Filter .... Many drivers have heard about oil, fuel & air filters, but you may not know about a fourth filter in your vehicle that's responsible for cleaning the air you breathe -- the cabin air filter. For allergy sufferers, a quality cabin air filter is an essential feature. The cabin air filter prevents dust, pollen & other contaminants from entering the passenger compartment. Many cabin air filters also have a layer of activate charcoal that can trap odors (such as smoke), providing additional protection for the vehicle's occupants. The cabin air filter also provides protection for the air conditioning evaporator inside the vehicle's HVAC system. This dark, moist environment is ripe for fostering mold & mildew growth. An accumulation of mold & mildew can produce unpleasant odors & the formation of irritating & toxic spores. While an aerosol disinfectant can be sprayed into the HVAC unit to kill the unwanted microbes, a better solution is to regularly replace the filter with a premium cabin air filter that is made from a mold-resistant material. Any customer who is buying motor oil, an oil or engine air filter, wiper blades or other maintenance items should consider having their cabin air filter replaced at the same time. Besides the health benefits of changing your cabin air filter, there are performance benefits as well. Plugged cabin air filters can restrict airflow through the heater, defroster and air conditioner. Clogged systems may take longer to defrost the windows & heat/cool the interior. Basic duct-only cabin air filters typically have a service life of 2-3 years, 20,000 - 30,000 miles, but actual service life will depend on driving conditions. Odor-absorbing cabin air filters with activated charcoal are good for about 12-14 months, or 15,000 miles, so annual replacement is recommended. If you are experiencing any of the conditions mentioned, call today to make an appointment to have your cabin air filter checked/replaced.
