Magic Carpets
Magic Carpets was founded by Henry and Evelyn Brock in 1955. Henry grew up in the west side of Chattanooga and was an Army veteran who served as an MP all over the , including Schofield Barracks in Hawaii right before the Pearl Harbor bombing. Evelyn grew up in an Ooltewah family that worked for the Southern Railroad in James County during its prime. Henry and Evelyn had three children-Roger, Mary and Polly; all three grew up with the family business.

From 1950-54, Henry sold discontinued carpet samples in Neighborhood Drug Store on Lee Highway. His success and the increasing demand for larger rugs forced Henry rent a greater selling space, and the “Rug Mart” was opened on July 5, 1955. With women working outside the home, families could afford to cover their hardwood floors with color and business boomed. After selling the original location, “Rug Mart” was reopened at a neighboring location under the name “Magic Carpets.”

Magic Carpets earned its reputable, Dunn and Bradstreet credit rating from a fine carpet installation done for an official of the same company. Shortly thereafter, Magic Carpets was permitted to sell a high end carpet line that was only available through Fowler Brothers Furniture in Chattanooga, but sold more of it-at 50% of the price. This innovative move attracted the business of major mills and suppliers, led to more local networking opportunities, and gained a lucrative contract with Olan Mills to carpet their plant and 1000 studios nationwide.

In 1970, Magic Carpets was accredited with the Better Business Bureau and in 1976, Roger joined the family business full time after college graduation. Using his business degree, he modernized Magic Carpets with the latest in business practices, ethics, and technology to improve efficiency and increase customer satisfaction.

With the passing of Henry in 1990 and Evelyn in 2011, Roger continues what his parents began with strong family values, modern business practices, and commitment to customer service. Magic Carpets is complaint free with the Better Business Bureau since 1970, is a member of the National and Southeastern Tennessee Home Builders Associations, and continues to be a trusted small business leader in the same locale where Henry and Evelyn started it all.
