It is with deepest regret that we inform the audio community of Armando (AJ) Conti’s unexpected passing. AJ’s lifelong passion was designing and manufacturing precision audio products in pursuit of “The Truth”, as he called it, for the most accurate sound reproduction. We first want the industry to know that AJ has left Basis on extremely strong financial ground as confirmed by the company’s CPA. We are in deep gratitude to Basis long term employees, both present and past, who are committed to the company’s continued success. As many of you know, Basis is an industry leading organization, but also a close ‘family’. There will be little to no delay in fulfilling all of the company’s obligations to customers, suppliers, and business partners, although there may be some interruptions over the next few weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact Jolanta Conti, AJ’s wife, at Basis who is now running the company. Jolanta’s professional experience includes practicing commercial and corporate law for 10 years in both the United Kingdom and Australia. Jolanta has expertise in complex commercial matters including contract negotiations, business development, and patent and intellectual property. Jolanta has worked with global companies including Morgan Stanley, Shell, BP, BHP and many others. Prior to meeting AJ, she was carefully evaluated and selected to be Bristol-Myers Squibb’s lead attorney for all of Eastern Europe. We are excited to continue AJ’s pursuit of the most ‘truthful’ and accurate sound reproduction, extreme precision and uncompromising commitment to quality in all Basis products. Further, AJ has a number of products in the company’s pipeline that are ready for release. All design, testing and prototyping work is finished with completed units and parts already in inventory. We are so grateful to the many industry friends who have already reached out to Basis to support the company and its continued success. It seems there is always some new analog product that someone is raving. A.J. eventually borrows or buys new nearly everything it seems, to perform full measurement and listening tests. Vintage seems hot lately, so A.J. purchased some of the most noted vintage turntables. His intent is to possibly find even just one sonic area that might be interesting and telling about why some folks gravitate toward such products. The picture below is one of the prettiest turntables of all time, the Thorens 124, which we estimate to have been manufactured in 1958. Notice the Superarm 9 mounted to the turntable! Stay tuned for some "tech talk" from A.J. about this most attractive machine, and some of his listening impressions.

Perfection is a word we often use at Basis Audio. While true perfection does not exist, all efforts point toward that goal. The ultimate in precision, accuracy, finish, performance......the impossible goal does remain the goal, day in and day out. For parts using our critical "textured glow finish" A.J. reserves a day with the plant manager, travels 3 hours the night before, and works with the manager and finishing expert all day if needed. If it takes 3 trips to achieve what A.J. has in his "mind's eye", then 3 days it is. Nothing seems to please A.J. more than a rack full of perfectly finished Basis parts! Well....maybe a concert....

Another shot of Bobby Watson from the Berklee Jazz Festival.

I hope some folks read our posts a few weeks ago and were able to get to the Beantown Jazz Festival put on by the acclaimed Berklee College of Music. With Berklee faculty, star students, and special guest performers it was a day of fantastic music. With 3 stages running at most times it was a sonic feast. The treat of the day for me was when Matt Savage, piano and jazz prodigy, teamed up with the great jazz saxophonist, Bobby Watson. You can search each name and you will understand why this performance was an unforgettable musical experience. You can see Bobby Watson in the two photos, with Matt Savage shown at the piano in one of the images. I've heard some folks say that their own system sounds better than a live performance. My only comment would be to get to some chamber, symphonic, or jazz concerts where there is no PA system. At outdoor performances like this jazz festival, you can often get beside the stage and totally avoid the sound of the PA. Note where the pictures are taken from: side stage, 10 feet from the players. That position at the festival was fantastic sounding! Yours in the music, A.J.
