So tomorrow is Independence Day......and you're wondering......"Is there anything to do that will really get me in the spirit of Independence Day?" Well guess what.....we may have just the thing for you! Come join the Artillery Company of Newport on July 4th and we'll add a little history to your day!!! Be a part of the celebration of our nation's 241st birthday!!! We'll start our day at Island Cemetery on Farewell Street around 9:00 AM with a wreath laying ceremony at the grave of William Ellery, signer of the Declaration of Independence, followed by a musket salute! Then be on hand for the 142nd annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of the Old Colony House at 11:00. Finally, we culminate the day with our big salute to the nation in Washington Square! At the stroke of 12 noon, we will fire a 21 gun salute to the nation with our 4 cannons forged by Paul Revere!!! Yes....THAT Paul Revere!!!! One shot every minute until all 21 shots have rung out......then get your cameras ready as we fire all four together in a salute to the men and women serving in our armed forces!!!!! And if that hasn't satisfied your hunger for history, it's open house at our armory/museum just down the road on Clarke Street.
