Thursday, February 15, brings a local debut by the Dave King Trio, featuring King on drums, Matt Mitchell on piano, and Billy Peterson on bass. Best known as the rhythmic engine behind The Bad Plus, Dave King brings a finely wrought musicality and wicked humor to every project he has been involved with. A multidisciplinary musician and composer, King has collaborated with artists ranging from Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano to Boots Riley and the Mark Morris Dance Group. For this concert, King presents his telepathic trio, a band documented on King’s 2012 release, I’ve Been Ringing You. "King transforms standards like ‘If I Should Lose You’ into dark and ethereal riddles. On paper it’s his most traditional move to date, but unlike any standards record in recent memory.”—The Village Voice Jazz at the Athenaeum Winter 2018 series> RALPH MOORE QUARTET - FEBRUARY 9 DAVE KING TRIO - FEBRUARY 15 BEN ALLISON & THINK FREE - FEBRUARY 22 CLAUDIA VILLELA / KENNY WERNER - MARCH 2 ALL CONCERTS BEGIN AT 7:30 PM. Johnson. Active as a member of The Tonight Show Band from 1995 to 2010, his first Athenaeum performance dates to 1997 as a member of pianist Cedar Walton’s Eastern Rebellion quartet with Billy Higgins. He is joined for this performance by stellar pianist Reed, a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, praised by JazzTimes for “his expansive jazz vocabulary and wide-ranging sensibilities...sophistication, maturity, and deep swing.” Jazz at the Athenaeum Winter 2018 series> RALPH MOORE QUARTET - FEBRUARY 9 DAVE KING TRIO - FEBRUARY 15 BEN ALLISON & THINK FREE - FEBRUARY 22 CLAUDIA VILLELA / KENNY WERNER - MARCH 2 ALL CONCERTS BEGIN AT 7:30 PM.
