The Acoustic Evenings series at the Athenaeum showcases local, San Diego acoustic musicians. Three performers are featured in each program and are available at the intermission reception and post-concert meet-and-greet. Local musician and presenter Jefferson Jay will host the evenings. The project advances the Athenaeum’s commitment to support San Diego talent. The spring series begins on Friday, April 28, with Dornob Collective, Rob Deez, and Jeffrey Joe Morin. Dornob is a collective of musicians that has been playing Persian music in San Diego since 1985. The members’ goals, in addition to friendship and fun, include learning the Persian musical tradition, fostering creativity, and crossing cultural bridges. Band members include Farhad Bahrami on guitar and electric oud; Fernando Gomez on drums; Hamid Radvar on keyboard and piano; Behnam Nowzar on bass; and Jesse Audelo on tenor sax and flute. The group has produced several CDs, and has been nominated for the San Diego Music Awards. Of a 2014 performance at Southwestern College, Sun staff member Evan Cintron wrote, “More fun than serious, the sextet group transformed a bland room into a musical paradise. When the first chord was struck, the room slowly slipped into a trance with the soft singing and mellow Persian instruments.” Rob Deez, a self-professed “comedic singer-songrhymer,” appeals to many different audiences. The comedic side fits in at comedy shows, the singer side works at coffee shops and bars, and the rhyming side does well at hip-hop shows. Deez says he’s “not worried about being pigeonholed as a novelty act” and adds, “There’s a lot of improvising in my act.” Lindsay White, in her 2013 San Diego Troubadour article Rob Deez: Mild-mannered Medical Professional by Day, Singer-Songrhymer by Night, wrote, “Deez incorporates the acoustic singer-songwriter sentiment to many of his tunes, not just with the obvious employment of his acoustic guitar, but with a subtle infusion of emotional longing and romance. This underlying vulnerability is perfectly placed amidst his light-hearted jokes and quick-spit rhymes, adding a layer of depth.” Jeffrey Joe Morin’s collection of ballads, blues and “heartbroke” laments are found in his recent CD, Big Ol’ Heart. Steeped in the blues, jazz, swing, honky-tonk, and R & B, he performs acoustic guitar renditions of standards and of his own wry and romantic songs, influenced by lyricist/composers from Johnny Mercer to Randy Newman. Bart Mendoza of the San Diego Community News Group wrote, “Even among a crowd of local all-stars like this [at Java Joe’s], Morin is a true standout.” DATES for the series Friday, April 28, 7:30 p.m.—Dornob Collective, Rob Deez, and Jeffrey Joe Morin Friday, May 19, 7:30 p.m.—Mark Goffeney, Gabriela Aparicio, and Cory Wilkins Friday, May 26, 7:30 p.m.—Trails and Rails, Mohavisoul, Jefferson Jay TICKETS Series (3 concerts–9 performers): $30 for members and students; $45 for nonmembers Individual tickets: $12 for members and students; $17 for nonmembers (858) 454-5872 @[6538617382:274:Dornob] @[1014973791:2048:Jefferson Jay] @[70404533033:274:Rob Deez]
