This week we are spotlighting the 2016 first place female finisher in the 1 Mile – 10 year old Ryleigh Wood Ryleigh, 10, is a rising 5th grader at Boonsboro Elementary who loves running and soccer, according to her father Jeff. She began both sports at the age of three, which was also the first year she participated in the Amazing Mile. Jeff tells us that “she didn’t have much of a choice at that time but has asked us to sign her up each year since.” When asked, Ryleigh said one of her favorite memories from Amazing Mile is that she “was on the postcard in 2012 and maybe that was good luck because I won the quarter mile race that year.” With a family of runners it’s no surprise that Ryleigh would enjoy the sport Jeff tells us that both of his parents are runners as well, “mom is in the VHSL Hall of Fame for running and my dad is a marathoner”. The enjoyment for running has continued to spread through the Wood family and Ryleigh says that the Amazing Mile “quickly became a family tradition with my brother, Coleman, running too”. This will mark Ryleigh 7th year participating in the races in September and will mark her first year in the VA 4Miler.

This week in our Amazing Mile feature we are spotlighting the runner from furthest away in the 2016 Amazing Mile... fb.me/78pbkRvxF

This week in our Amazing Mile feature we are spotlighting the runner from furthest away in the 2016 Amazing Mile – 4 year old, Kennedy Wagner from Bradenton, Florida. Kennedy’s mom, Jennifer, offered us some insight to the world of Kennedy with this marvelous description of her littler girl “If the world is a glass room, Kennedy is a bowling ball. She takes the bull by the horns and does everything at 110%. But she balances that out so well by being so incredibly sweet. She has an ability to brighten a whole room with her smile and loves to help others. She’s destined for great things, no doubt about it!” Having only met Kennedy through this conversation with Jennifer, and through the pictures they provided, one can’t help but take note of her precious smile and spot on her mom, Jennifer is in her description of Kennedy!! The biggest questions has to be what would make the family travel to Lynchburg for the race, and Jennifer explained that while they no longer live in Lynchburg they have been part of the Lynchburg community for many years, and have been involved with the races before. “As long as we lived in Lynchburg (me since 2003, my husband, Phil, since 2007) we participated as watchers of VA 10Miler. That’s one of the things we love most! Even when you’re just watching the race, you still feel a part of it.” The Wagners’ moved away from Lynchburg in 2012, first to Kansas, and then to Florida in 2015, but they knew they would return one day to participate in the races, and Kennedy’s participation in the Amazing Mile, was just the first part of their involvement in the races over the weekend. It was truly a family affair, as Phil, participated in the VA 4 Miler. “My husband and I actually started our weight loss journey while living in Lynchburg. Together, we’ve since lost a combined 300 pounds. We were never able to run the track when we were living in Lynchburg, so we knew we wanted to return one day to do it. We had the opportunity to get up there for a quick trip from our home in Florida and knew we’d want our kids to be a part of this great event! We participated many years as watchers but wanted to be runners this time! It’s easy to see that even though the Wagners’ are no longer local, they are still locals in their hearts, and we hope that one day they will make Lynchburg their home again. “There’s no place like Lynchburg. We’ve been everywhere and each community has their own feel, but nothing feels like Lynchburg. We love the sense of community there and knew if we were going to run a bigger race, we’d want to do it with our people. We also wanted our children to feel that. We’re very connected in all of our communities, but even at a young age, though they’ve never lived there, they know we mean Lynchburg when we say “home.”
