During the housing boom and even prior to that, developers over-built the stock of for-sale, single family homes, especially expensive and large homes that do not match the basic housing requirements of many of our region's households. Mutual Housing California responds to this market imbalance by constructing safe, well-designed rental housing that is affordable for the diverse households of our region. We build apartments and townhomes for our diverse household on a fixed income, young families just starting out, and extended multi-generational families. We also acquire, often at the request of elected officials and neighborhood groups, deteriorated and neglected apartment properties and turn them into shining examples of housing that can bring pride and stability to families and communities. Our new communities have computer learning labs, community-wide free wireless Internet access, energy efficiency features, and play areas for children.
Safe housing that doesn't break the family budget is the stepping stone from which families gain stability and become successful. Our mutual housing association provides community building activities, supportive services, and educational programs to residents and surrounding neighbors. Our focus is on developing the leadership potential of residents. We provide leadership training and mentoring. Our experience shows that communities will thrive when informed and confident residents organize themselves, identify common goals, and methodically plan and implement programs and strategies.
Through our own financial education and computer learning programs, youth development work, and safety projects, and our community partners' services and classes, like English as a Second Language, nutrition, tutoring, parenting support, and the like, mutual housing resident households have a chance at becoming economically successful, improve their ability to contribute their skills to their community, and most importantly, find the stability that is so important for children and their future life chances.
