For the past 75 years, United Salad Co. has a long history of delivering fresh, quality produce throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 1941, with the onset of World War II, Mary and Leo Spada knew that women would have to provide for their families while still having enough time to put dinner on the table. With $15, a flatbed truck, and a bathtub, she began washing and prepackaging salad to sell to the women in her area. Within a few short years, the Spada’s—joined by their sons Ernie and Leon—had moved to a larger location and by 1960 United Salad Company was recognized as a full-line wholesaler.
Today United Salad Co. is run by Mary’s son Ernie Sr., grandson Ernie Jr., and great-grandson Ernie III and is operated out of Portland, Oregon, in a 200,000 square foot warehouse and office space that employs over 350 people. They offer the highest quality conventional and organic produce, and also a full-line of custom-cut fruits and vegetables as well as grocery, dry goods, grab & go, and meal replacement items to the marketplace. They still hold on to Mary and Leo’s idea to “Establish a reputation of honesty and loyalty, and a commitment for providing the customer with the best quality product.”
