The City of Grimes was originally named Stewart after Mr. Stewart who purchased the first lot in a land auction and built a drug store. When the official city name was sent into the Postmaster, the name was declined becuase there already was a Stuart in Iowa. The town was then named after the third governor of the State of Iowa. It is not known why it was not named after the first governor; Briggs, as there were also some Briggs living here at that time.
