The influx of Polish families came to New Jersey in difficult years before World War I. The Polish population of Newark grew and expanded. Some families moved to Irvington. As their number increased St. Stanislaus and St. Casimir’s parishes had the difficult task of caring for them. Therefore on October 20, 1925 Bishop John J. O’Connor of Newark appointed an associate priest from St. Casimir’s parish in Newark, Rev. Metislaus Lankau, as founding pastor of the new parish in Irvington. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church continues to keep the strong faith of the people and helps immigrants from Poland to feel at home in America. When America saw the decline of city life in the last thirty years, people of the Parish of Sacred Heart of Jesus stayed with their church, even if they moved to other cities and suburbs. Today the Parish has a strong Polish and Polish-American community and welcomes all ethnic and racial groups, including Haitian, Nigerian, and Spanish. Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish is a beacon of hope for the Polish people and all who live in the neighborhood.
