Designing a custom residence to take full advantage of the property can have its unique challenges. The home that we call “Stone Hinge” currently under construction in East Aurora was designed to take advantage of the opportunities that building on this hillside site presented. Terraces have been sculpted from the earth, to provide for easily assessable entrances at different levels. Adjacent exterior spaces blend back into the existing hillside where key trees were preserved. The residence pivots about the stone chimney as it steps down the slope in order to take advantage of the panoramic views to the west. The main entrance porch welcomes guests upon their arrival. A cross slope walkway from the guest parking leads visitors naturally past the elevated west terrace to the covered entrance. The existing meadow on the north side of the property is being expanded and leveled for a lawned activity area and a new gravel driveway that provides easy access to the owner’s outbuildings. The full basement on the north end includes daylight windows and a walk out around the North West corner. Exterior living spaces are being designed for the east courtyard. This space is shielded from the prevailing west winds. Easy access to this courtyard is provided directly from the kitchen and from the overlooking pocket porch as well. The garage entry was located on the “high” south side. The garage entrance is “out of view” of the main entrance and is angled away from the west winds. Additional parking and a wide driveway are being shielded by a retaining wall in order to divert storm water away from the house and driveway. The site plan accurately depicts the design features that are under construction as depicted in the photographs of this active job site.

The Great Room is central to the design geometrically and spiritually. This area welcomes guest upon their arrival and provides for commanding views overlooking the pool terrace, sand dunes, and beach to the west. This space was designed for entertaining as well as every day use. The South Side features the stone fire place, while the north side accommodates interaction with the kitchen, bar, and loft spaces. All four of the interior elevations were developed with complementary features to emphasize their function. The medieval Mediterranean style was developed to suite the waterfront site and the clients design tastes.
