Many thanks to Dr. Gary Feucht and this lovely piece he shared! It's a beautiful thing when friends become family 💕 ** just a couple of corrections to the write up though: opened in 1907, currently owned by the sixth generation of family.😊❤️
What a Story!!! Abicks bar is a huge piece of Detroit history tucked in a neighborhood in southwest Detroit. It has been family owned since 1907. Dr. Feucht has been going to this hidden treasure for years and is so close to the owners he considers them family. During the early years there was also a barber shop, a shoeshine and a cobbler in this building . During World War II a woman named Manya and her mother took over the family business while the men were away at war. They would not only serve drinks but they'd also collect neighborhood's ration stamps and prepare feasts for the locals. More recently there was a problem in the men's restroom and a secret crawlspace was discovered with old barrels and a crate advertising "Pond's Kil-A-Kol, Recommended for Colds, Coughs, and Cattarh." was found, these items were believed to be from the years of prohibition. The Abick family rarely got rid of things, which has made it possible to donate so many items to museum's and churches over the years. At the age of 91 Manya passed and left the business to her grandson Eric, who she had raised, which makes him the sixth generation to run the family bussiness. Eric had been doing a bit of cleaning out of the upstairs quarters and came across something special. On a recent visit, Eric presented Dr. Feucht with his incredible find, the cane that had once belonged to his mother. This cane is hand carved into what looks to be a fox head and hand painted. It is possibly a polish cane as the Abick family originally immigrated from Poland. There is a metal ferro on the tip which leads us to believe it is from the early 1900's. Dr. Feucht's cane collection has many unique and valuable pieces but this is one of his all time favorites because of who it came from! Thank you so much Eric for this amazing gift! If you are ever in the area stop by and enjoy the great people and the beautiful history this place has to offer.
