Carolyn’s Place began due to an act of courage on the part of one woman. On the night of November 4, 1991 something happened in the New England town of Watertown , Connecticut that made residents put their beliefs to the test.
On that cold and dreary night, Father Robert Rousseau, pastor of St. John’s Catholic Church prepared to leave the church. He didn’t plan to return that evening and stood indecisively for a few moments debating whether or not to turn lights on in the church parking lot, when he decided to just turn them on. He went into the dark church entryway and walked over to where the switch was. As he was just about to leave he heard a tiny cry. Startled, he looked down. A shaft of light was hitting a box in the corner, and he spotted a little foot inside.
Father did not know if it was a doll or a baby at first. There was just that tiny cry in the darkness. He bent over and saw that it was a beautiful baby wrapped in a blue T-shirt. It was as if God had poked her at the right moment and said, “Let yourself be known.” The whole time, she had let out that one tiny cry just as Father was preparing to leave. If he hadn’t gone to turn the lights on and if she hadn’t cried out at just that moment, Father would never have known she was there and the baby might not have survived the night.
The baby, who was later determined to be only 3 to 4 hours old, was named Carolyn, because November 4 th is the feast of of St. Charles Borromeo, and was given the middle name Marie, for the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Little Carolyn Marie, in the biblical spirit of “a child shall lead”, became the motivation of an entire parish community to reach out and help desperate mothers. The circumstances surrounding Carolyn’s birth, while unknown, can be imagined. Carolyn’s mother had her baby without the love, care and support that should accompany every pregnancy.
Carolyn’s Place was established one year later with a mission to provide that love, care and support to any woman who is facing a difficult pregnancy. It is our belief that every child is a wanted child.
No Woman Should Face Pregnancy Alone
