A look back... Although men had long served as nurses in the military and religious orders, they were expected to fight in the conflict during World War I. Nursing became an almost exclusively female profession for half a century, and men were not allowed into most nursing schools. As the first male graduate of the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing, William Malone was well ahead of his time in 1971. Following a 1982 US Supreme Court ruling on gender discrimination, men began to reenter the profession in large numbers. #BHLookBack

We are excited to join with our friends at Springfield Museums as a partial sponsor of their Zoo in You exhibit! Throughout the month, members of our medical staff visited the museum to share some fun and interesting facts about microbes and the human body. In today's "Microbe Minute" Dr. Mary-Alice Abbott, geneticist at Baystate Children's Hospital, explores her favorite part of the exhibit, the What's Your DNA? Puzzle. Baystate Health shared WWLP-22News's post.
Earlier today Baystate Pediatrician Dr. John O’Reilly told WWLP-22News that doctors now have to ask parents whether there are opioids in the home, just as they’ve always asked parents where they store their cleaning supplies. He said early warning signs of a baby or child accidentally taking an opioid are lethargy and impaired cognitive functioning.
22News Reporter Kait Walsh explains what doctors recommend be done to keep these powerful drugs away from children.
Researchers say as the opioid epidemic worsens across the country, this data is proof it’s having a trickledown effect on younger generations.
