The Allen ISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Dr. Philip A. Obado as the new director of bands for Allen High School last evening. Dr. Obado comes to Allen from Baylor University where he has served as Assistant Director of Bands. While at Baylor, his responsibilities included Associate Director of the Golden Wave Band, Director of the Courtside Players, conducting the Concert Band and teaching courses in conducting. Before joining the Baylor staff, he was Associate Director of Bands at Illinois State University where he was the director of the Big Red Marching Machine, conducted the Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band and taught courses in conducting and marching band techniques. He also taught for twelve years in Florida public schools including directing bands at East River High School and University High School in Orlando and South Fork High School in Stuart. A Florida native, Dr. Obado received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from Michigan State University, a Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music in Education and Performance from Ithaca College. As Director of Bands in Allen, Obado will head the Allen Eagle Escadrille and also the school’s extensive concert band program. Obado will join the Allen High School staff on May 15.

Congratulations to Lowery Freshman Center student Priya Mandava for receiving the “Outstanding Interpretation Award” for her entry in the Texas PTA Reflections Program. Priya's entry, a literature piece entitled “Windowsill,” was one of only seven entries to receive this award, the highest honor given by the Texas PTA. Priya and LFC classmate Clarissa Leal each also received an overall “Award of Excellence” from the program, allowing them to advance to the national level competition. The Reflections Program is a yearly competition where students from all over the country can submit entries in dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Priya will receive her state-level recognition at the state awards ceremony on May 6 in San Antonio.

Allen Independent School District added 3 new photos.
Cheatham Elementary School sixth grader Abigail Inocion won the national Southwest Airlines necktie design contest. The contest was part of Southwest's adopt a pilot program where pilots visit schools around the country and educate students about flight and airplanes. Southwest Captain Ed Evans (holding award) was the pilot working with Cheatham students.
