The loss of his mother, Kathryn, to sarcoma, in addition to his own eighteen-month battle with the disease, led Tom Amschwand to establish the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation. In 2017, recognizing the changing cancer landscape, the organization unanimously adopted the name A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF) in order to better reflect its mission. Today, ASCF provides much needed tangible support to families affected by cancer including but not limited to navigation services for those residing in the Houston area as well as temporary housing for out-of-town cancer families visiting Houston for cancer treatment.
