Highlights from the MCM Construction Inc. Story:
“Building Bridges through the 21st Century”
MCM Construction Inc. was founded on January 31, 1973 as a General Contractor specializing in Heavy Highway and Bridge Construction.
The first project awarded to MCM Construction Inc. was Pocket Road, in South Sacramento, as a Subcontractor. Since that time, MCM Construction Inc. has completed more than 300 projects as a Prime Contractor, Subcontractor or Joint Venture Partner, and has numerous projects underway in California.
With its roots in Northern California, in 1983, MCM Construction Inc. first ventured into Southern California to complete the Universal Avenue / Hollywood Boulevard overcrossing in Universal City. 1986 saw the beginning of a select series of jobs in Southern California, all part of the Century (U-105) Freeway Project: Paramount I, Central Avenue, Lynwood, Aviation, Paramount II, Avalon, Harbor Interchange, and the largest single contract awarded to MCM Construction Inc. to that time, The Long Beach Interchange (I-105/I-710).
In 1989, MCM Construction Inc. played a major role in the rescue of victims trapped on the Cypress Freeway in Oakland after the Loma Prieta Earthquake. For many hours after the disaster struck, MCM Construction Inc.’s President, Jim Carter, and Vice President, Harry McGovern, actively participated in the rescue. Six years later, MCM Construction Inc. was awarded the first of two contracts which were part of the realignment and rebuilding of the Cypress Freeway in Oakland.
One of MCM Construction Inc.’s greatest team efforts was on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu at the Malibu Lagoon Emergency Bridge Replacement in 1995, where efforts of MCM Construction Inc.’s key personnel completed the Phase I removal and replacement in a record 35 days, exactly 100 days ahead of schedule.
Beginning in 1997, MCM Construction Inc. was awarded 3 major contracts in Orange County: Two contracts for the realignment of the 5/91 Interchange and the I-5 Crescent / La Palma, which immediately contributed to the ease of access to the Disney amusement complex. All 3 projects were successfully completed by 2003.
In 2002, MCM Construction Inc. began work on the award-winning Noyo River Bridge located in Fort Brag. Set against the scenic Mendocino shoreline, this oft-photographed bridge perfectly expresses MCM Construction Inc.’s rendering of the designers artful intentions.
MCM Construction Inc. began work on one of the few cast-in-place segmental bridges in the State of California in July of 2006. The Confusion Hill Bridge, completed in 2010, provides a safe bypass to a challenging area often beset by landslides damaging to infrastructure. The Confusion Hill Bridge provides a reliable and efficient thoroughfare accessing the Redwood area of the North Coast.
Beginning in 2007, MCM Construction Inc. was awarded a series of landmark contracts on the San Francisco / Oakland Bay Bridge. The first project, contract amount $180 million, was located on Interstate 80 at the Oakland touchdown of the new spans of the Bay Bridge, part of the new East Span San Francisco Bay Bridge Replacement project. It connects the side-by-side skyway bridges to the Oakland Shoreline and the toll plaza.
A partnership between MCM Construction Inc., Caltrans, the Bay Area Toll Authority, and the California Transportation Commission was established early on for this project. A strong commitment to partnering and teamwork was the driving reason for success on the Oakland Touchdown Project. The size and magnitude of the job and collaboration of multiple agencies and stakeholders presented challenges from the onset.
MCM Construction Inc. mitigated these challenges, along with the public’s demand for excellence, efficiency, and speed. The project team members worked together to minimize complaints, kept the public and all stakeholders well-informed, proactively addressed environmental constraints, as well as maintained an aggressive schedule. The project was completed ahead of schedule and within contract budget. The Oakland Touchdown project was a partnering success showcase for which MCM Construction Inc. and Caltrans earned the “Excellence in Partnering Award” given by the Associated General Contractors organization.
