~ Poinsett County is bounded on the north by Craighead County; on the east by Mississippi County; on the south by Crittenden and Cross County and on the west by Jackson

~ The County was named for Joel Poinsett, a statesman, scientist, botanist and secretary of war under President Van Buren.

~ According to the 2010 Census the population is 24,583.

~ Its area is 756 square miles.

~Running north and south through the center is Crowley's Ridge, a unique geological phenomenon. East and west of this highland are level fertile valleys and prairies where cotton, rice, milo, wheat, corn and soybean farming is carried on successfully. Cattle is also very popular in this area.

~ Hunting and fishing are popular activities. Duck and goose hunting along the Mississippi Flyway draws tourists from around the world to the western part of the County during waterfowl season.

~ The Poinsett Lake and State Park are located 3 miles south of Harrisburg. There you will find paved campsites with full hookups, a playground, a nature trail and a pavilion. Poinsett Lake has excellent fishing and boating with boats and kayaks available to rent at the Park. The Dam area has a covered pier and a boat ramp with parking.
