Whether he is designing a custom residence, a home-away- from home boutique hotel, or a line of furniture or textiles, architect and interior designer Campion Platt has one thing in mind: luxury. “Luxury is about both materiality and context,” he explains, adding that context might mean creating clear, open spaces within the confines of a Manhattan residence, or selecting opulent finishes – such as leather, resin, or marble – to accentuate spatial forms. Platt’s ideas of luxury consistently incorporate fine craftsmanship and contemporary styling as well as eco-sensitive design. For the past twenty years, his firm has shown clients across the country how to make modern design both sophisticated and soothing.

Platt earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University. A member of the American Institute of Architects and the Architectural League of NY, he understands the importance of creating architecture and interiors that meld seamlessly. His holistic approach creates highly personalized spaces – making him a favorite of celebrities including Al Pacino, Meg Ryan, Roger Waters, Conan O’Brien Jay McInerney and socialite Anne Hearst. A full gamut of specialized artisans and craftspeople execute Platt’s designs, which often incorporate new and innovative material uses.

Designs are dictated by extensive client-generated wish lists, rather than preconceived notions, resulting in a varied portfolio. “No two of our projects are the same,” says Platt, who emphasizes contrasts in design and believes that his work is constantly evolving. The only element that consistently remains the same is a commitment to clean, fresh luxury.

The full-service firm has been a leader in boutique hotel design, setting benchmarks with such projects as the Mercer Hotel in New York and the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood (both of which Platt was involved in as a co- developer as well), and Boston’s Bulfinch Hotel. Recognition and accolades for Platt and the firm have been widespread, with ranking on Architectural Digest’s “AD 100” list of the world’s top interior designers, and New York Magazine’s “The City’s 100 Best Architects and Decorators,” as well as publication in magazines from Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Wallpaper, Objekt and Gotham to Esquire and Travel & Leisure.
To keep his design inspirations flowing, Platt travels frequently. While he appreciates the beauty of European cities such as Paris, he is most inspired by the simple, deliberate housing and lifestyles of Southeast Asia. “I like considering the translation to our own culture, and the free association of ideas.” Always generating new ideas, Platt recently launched a custom furniture company to complement his architecture and interiors. From 19th Century campaign-style furniture to sleek modern pieces, the collections include the same sumptuous finishes and careful attention to proportion and detail and environmentally friendly materials.

Platt is currently designing a “green village” at The Greenbrier Sporting Club, located on the historic grounds of The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Platt consulted on architectural design for the new green neighborhood, “Green Homes” at The Greenbrier, as well as developed a palette of healthy, “green” interior finishes and complimentary eco-friendly “green” furniture packages for the new green homes.

In addition to The Greenbrier Sporting Club, Platt is designing a large, turn-key home development at the DPS Sporting Club Development’s sister property, Turks & Caicos Sporting Club at Ambergris Cay. Platt consulted on the architectural plans for the beachfront 60 unit, turn-key cottages and has developed unique interiors and furnishings for their inspired eco-development. His new luxe-green eco designs will be featured in the Hampton’s Cottage and Gardens 2008 “Idea House” in the Hamptons. He is also working on a number of fabric, lighting, and furniture collection lines to continue the theme of modern luxury which includes Casella Lighting, Haviland China, Roubini Rugs, McGuire Furniture and his already launched Jim Thompson METRO CLOTH Collection of textiles.
