BETCO Scaffolds began in 1945 when Ed Gilbreath opened the Houston office of a family-owned company in Dallas. Ed kept two sets of clothes at the office. He called on the customer, got the order, and came to the office to put on his work clothes. He then, delivered the scaffold, often driving to Dallas to pick up inventory the night before. As the Houston office expanded, so did Ed’s portion of company ownership.
Additional salesmen were hired, and soon the affectionate nickname Mr. Ed stuck.
Safway Scaffolds Co. of Houston was incorporated in 1949 with $10,000 capital and 1,000 shares of stock. In 1957, Safway formed a new corporation, Builders Equipment & Tool Co., known as BETCO Scaffolds. Mr. Ed’s shares increased until he was sole owner.
Over the years, Mr. Ed created and patented scaffolding devices that improved safety, increased effectiveness and decreased man-hours for everyone in the industry. BETCO also once manufactured its own scaffolds and rented used equipment.
Nearly 70 years later, BETCO Scaffolds is still a privately held, professionally managed company, known throughout the country for its innovative approach to complex projects, dependability and responsiveness.
