Taxes can be fun right??
Warning: this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Education Credits Per a new law enacted June 29, 2015 taxpayers will not be allowed to claim the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit under § 25A, or the tuition deduction under § 222 unless the taxpayer has received a Form 1098-T from the educational institution. This change is effective for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2014—in other words, this year of 2015. Tax planning point. This may delay returns for some taxpayers as they must have the 1098-T in hand before filing. Tax preparers cannot claim an education credit or tuition deduction without seeing the Form 1098-T.

Deducting Charitable Contributions Yes, taxpayers really do need to have documentation and receipts! For cash and noncash donations of $250 or more, written contemporaneous acknowledgment from the charity is also needed. To determine if a donation of noncash items exceeds $500, which requires more documentation, taxpayers must combine similar items donated to any charity during the year. Courts have disallowed tax deductions for charitable contributions, even though the court recognizes a contribution was made, because the taxpayer lacked the documentation and correct acknowledgments required by the tax laws. You can check IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, for rules and explanations, or contact us.
