Unfortunately, Washington has seen it’s most recent casualty from a window fall. Window falls account for approximately 8 deaths and 3,300 injuries to children ages 5 and under annually in the US. Windows attract curious children and children under age 7 are most at risk of falling from windows. Most window falls happen from windows with screens properly installed. Window falls are a preventable cause of injury and death to children. There are a few tips we can learn and share with other families to protect our children. • Teach kids and care givers that screens keep bugs out, not kids in. • Limit window opening to less than 4 inches on upper level windows or windows above 4 feet from the ground by installing window stops that can be easily removed by an adult in an emergency. • Keep areas in front of windows clear of anything a child can climb on. • Enforce a KID FREE ZONE in front of all windows. • Ask about window safety when your child visits other homes.
