City Theatrical Inc. was founded in 1986 by Gary Fails, a Broadway stagehand. While working on shows, Gary saw that there was a need for unique and custom lighting accessories for the entertainment lighting industry. Gary started City Theatrical in a garage in New York City's South Bronx to fill that need, often building products in the shop during the day and testing them in theatres at night. CTI soon became the place for lighting designers and electricians to go to get custom products. After exhibiting at LDI in 1994 and winning a product innovation award there, it became apparent that many lighting companies outside of New York City, and even around the world found the unique CTI products useful, and CTI’s dealer list soon grew to over 250 companies.
As CTI has grown, the complexity of its product line has also grown, and CTI is one of the technology leaders in the entertainment industry, innovating leading edge technologies such as wireless data transmission (the multi award-winning SHoW DMX™), and LED technology (PDS-750 TRX™ LED power/supplies and many other LED related products).
Since 2001, City Theatrical has utilized an innovative open book management system with a generous profit sharing component that encourages employee involvement in the growth of the company.
