Heartworms are one of the many unfortunate diseases that mosquitoes carry. Unfortunately, we see it here in the desert too! Is your pet up to date on heartworm prevention?

Today kicks off the first day of Heartworm Awareness Month, and although it is April Fool’s Day, Heartworm is not a joke. Meet our friend Sammy. Sammy was adopted as a senior citizen and lives a leisurely life with his new family enjoying long walks, hoarding tennis balls, and stealing bones from his Aussie brother. Last year Sammy presented to us with a skin issue. While it is not commonly seen here, we suspected that Sammy may have had Sarcoptic Mange, also known as Scabies. In order to treat for Sarcoptic Mange we need to treat with a medication that also kills heartworms. To be on the safe side, Dr. Afek ran a routine heartworm test before starting treatment. Unfortunately Sammy turned out to be heartworm positive! We were able to treat Sammy for heartworms with the help of 3 injections of Immiticide, some antibiotics and pain medication, and a lot of care and downtime at home from his family. The majority of the time that we see heartworms, it is not detectable through other symptoms and must be checked with a simple blood test. The earlier we are able to catch the disease, the less likely it is that there is severe and irreparable damage to your pet’s heart. If your pet is not current on heartworm prevention, or is overdue for a heartworm test- please call us today to set up an appointment! (623)932-3611

Our sister hospital, North Star, has already seen 2 dogs this week that had the unfortunate luck of being bit by a rattlesnake. Poor Rowdy was bit in his very own backyard! His family is thrilled to be taking him home today since he has been at North Star Animal Hospital since his rattlesnake bite on Tuesday. Spring is the ideal time to update this vaccination if your dog has had it in the past, and no time like the present to start the series if they haven't ever had it! Please call us to ask more about the rattlesnake vaccine and whether it is right for your dog.
Thursday is National Puppy Day, a well-deserved tribute to man’s (and woman’s) furry best friend.

It's not a fun Friday post, but a necessary one. We have the vaccine! Call us at 623-932-3611
It’s already spread to more than 50 dogs in Maricopa County and humans can even get it.
