Here is a really helpful tool to see the impact of the National Endowment of the Humanities in your area---enter your zipcode and see what programs are funded near you (probably way more than you realized!). Recent budget proposals cut all funding to the NEH, despite its incredibly positive influence on communities across America. http://www.nehimpact.org/index.html

Mission San Luis Rey's 1882 painting of St. Felix also exhibits a detailed underdrawing (seen here using infrared reflectography). Unlike that in the previous "Descent from the Cross" painting, this initial drawing was applied with pencil. His facial features, wrinkles, hands, and beads were precisely placed but still retain the effortless quality of virtuoso draftsmanship.

During an examination of Mission San Luis Rey's 18th or 19th century "Descent from the Cross" triptych, we used infrared reflectography to see the initial drawing below the paint layers (called the underdrawing). IR can teach us about an artist's techniques and working methods. This triptych is a beautiful copy of Ruben's "Descent from the Cross" from Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium. In these IR details, we can see that the copyist initially used a gestural, uncalculated but still compositionally faithful oil paint drawing to delineate the figures. Be sure to visit Mission San Luis Rey to see the Mission and their wonderful collection!
