The three simple words, “I am alive,” can bring peace of mind during disasters. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Puerto Ricans had very little connectivity to tell their loved ones they were safe. To meet those needs, our Red Cross teams are taking mobile hotspots on some aid routes. We have been able to provide people with a way to connect with loved ones, inform family members of their safety, charge their phones, and access information on the internet.

Alongside our partners, Red Cross disaster workers are supporting evacuation centers where people can find safe refuge from the fires, reconnect with loved ones and get important information. The American Red Cross is on the ground in California, working with officials and disaster partners to help people during what is now the deadliest week of wildfires in the state’s history. If you are searching for someone in the area or want to register yourself as safe, please visit the Red Cross Safe and Well website at More than 4,300 people affected by the wildfires have already registered on the site, available in English and Spanish. Registrations and searches can be done directly on the website, completed by texting SAFE to 78876, or by using the “I’m Safe” feature of the Red Cross Emergency App.

The Red Cross and our partners are supporting evacuation centers where people can find safe refuge from the deadly wildfires raging in California.
