Founded in 1740, St. Andrew’s Church was the first Anglican Church in Hartford County. The original “meeting house” was built in 1743 on a small hill in what is now the cemetery.
During the Revolution, parishioners agonized over loyalty to the King or the Colonies, and the Rector, Roger Viets, actually left for Nova Scotia. The Church, however, survived and, in 1807, plans were made for a new Church.
The present building was built two miles away, down Duncaster Road. Some thought the center of population was moving there. In 1828, the parish recognized their folly and moved the church back to its historic location.
Many additions and renovations have occurred over the years, the most recent in 2003.
The historic parish cemetery was opened in 1746 with the burial of a native American boy, "Charls" the son of John Robbins. Since, hundreds of men, women and children have found this eternal resting place, including many Revolutionary War and Civil War veterans. In this historic and beloved structure, an active and caring congregation seeks inspiration from the past to deal with the problems of today and the challenges of the future. Old St. Andrew’s is a Church worth finding.
