Established Dec. 17, 1956, and officially entrusted to the care of Bishop Andrew Grutka on Feb. 25, 1957, the Diocese of Gary has grown to 68 parishes, serving Roman Catholics in Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Starke counties in Northwest Indiana. It counts more than 18,000 students under Catholic instruction in its schools and religious education programs. The Most Rev. Donald Hying is the fourth bishop to lead the diocese, and the third bishop, Most Rev. Dale Melczek, serves as bishop emeritus.
