Mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 pm. Approximately 400 of the best junior high and middle school musicians and vocalists from dozens of schools will perform in the 70th annual Kern County Honors Music Festival at Rabobank Theater.

Kern County Superintendent of Schools Mary Barlow and Ethan from Sing Lum visited the "Do the Math" studios during yesterday's live show. Free, phone-in tutoring is available to students from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by calling (661) 636-4357 or toll free at (866) 636-6284. From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., “Do the Math” host Michael Cushine and several math tutors take problems from callers and work them out live on air. In Bakersfield, the program can be seen on Bright House Networks Ch. 15/15.1.

Congrats to McFarland Middle School, which has been named a 2017 “School to Watch" by the California Department of Education. Schools awarded this distinction are high-performing model schools that demonstrate academic excellence, responsiveness to the needs of young adolescents, and social equity. These schools host visitors from California and around the world who are looking to learn practices they can use to improve their middle grades schools and close the achievement gap. Way to go!

Nice reporting by Alex Fisher from 17-news about Centennial High School's mock trial team, which is headed to the state competition next month. They are sure to represent Kern County well! The team will be holding a "Family Take-Home BBQ Dinner" fundraiser on Feb. 23 from 3 to 6 pm. in the school's front parking lot. $45 will buy a dinner for 4 including deep pit beef, beans, salad and rolls. Email for tickets.

Congrats @stockdalehigh for its 5th straight Academic Decathlon win. Go rep Kern County well at states next month!
