Troubleshooting Tips Diagnosing a starting/charging issue should be done before replacing any parts. First, check the battery using a voltmeter. A fully charged battery should have a reading of 12.75 volts. If the battery is low the starter will not crank properly. With a voltmeter attached to the battery attempt to crank the engine and take a voltage reading. With a good battery and a good starter the voltage should not drop below 10.5 volts. If the starter does not function at all the battery voltage may stay at 12.75 volts. A visual inspection of the battery connections should be done to make sure the terminals are not corroded and the cable ends are tight and in good condition. As an auto electrical specialist, we use two additional tests to give a more complete analysis of the battery--a load test and a hydrometer test. If you are not comfortable performing the basic tests, have it done by an automotive professional or give us a call to make an appointment.
