Since 1985, Safer New Mexico Now (Safer) has worked in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Traffic Safety Division (TSD) and state law enforcement agencies to develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor state efforts to promote traffic safety. As a private, nonprofit organization, Safer effectively coordinates innovative traffic safety programs and partnerships that promote the combined use of law enforcement, marketing campaigns, media, and education. Safer advocates for increased motor vehicle occupant protection and decreased traffic-related death and injury. Safer is able to address requests from local communities and take appropriate, timely, and effective action in response to community concerns and emerging trends. Safer's geographical permeation and varied partnerships allow for outreach and coordination among smaller communities within the State. Safer also has the capacity to provide services to Spanish-speaking families and tribal communities.
On behalf of the NMDOT TSD, Safer provides management oversight in a number of initiatives:
Operation DWI Operation Buckle Down The New Mexico Child Safety Seat Distribution Program The New Mexico Fitting Station Program The Injury Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) The "100 Days & Nights of Summer" Campaign Click It or Ticket Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) NHTSA Standardized Child Passenger Safety Technician Training
