On the north side of Goldsboro, there had been little to no development for nearly 20 years. Rebuilding Broken Places CDC (RBPCDC) began economic development in this forgotten community with a mission to help raise the economic, educational and social levels of the low to moderate income families of Goldsboro, Wayne County. It is our belief that by leveraging partnerships we foster creation of community wide efforts that address poverty, racial injustice, family instability and education.
Through our focused investment over the last sixteen years, RBPCDC has created more than $7 million dollars in community assets in this struggling economic climate: Greenleaf Vision of Faith Community Center which is home to our administrative offices; RBP Christian Academy, a 3 Star state licensed childcare center providing the highest quality of early childhood education and development for children from infant to 5 years old; Project (Youth Empowered for Success and Service) our award winning after school programs providing, homework help, tutoring in math and reading, exciting enrichment activities and service opportunities, mentoring and more for at-risk school aged children up to high school; Greenleaf Grace Village, a 41 unit senior citizen affordable housing complex for low to moderate income seniors with a 100% occupancy rate since it opened in 2002; and Faith Estates, a 15 lot subdivision for first time hom ebuyers with single mothers with children representing of occupied homes. Our development in this community has been the impetus for additional economic development in this end of town with two strip shopping centers with small businesses, a car dealership, a Chinese restaurant, a Subway Restaurant and a Dollar General(opened just months ago).
During 2011, our home-ownership program allowed a single mother of two, whom we had worked with for nearly two years, to reach her dream of home-ownership; our investment of over $5000 provided scholarships to assist families with childcare and after-school care for their children.(This assistance, in the form of rate discounts, has enabled parents to work and attend school while we provide quality care and enrichment opportunities that their children would not normally be able to access); RBPCDC’s continued the efforts of Stop the Funeral Initiative, a collaboration with the Goldsboro Wayne Chapter of the NAACP and Covenant Partners from the faith community, that has been implementing a unique focused strategy in response to the current gang related violence and drug abuse crisis by offering workshops in personal development and goal setting, entrepreneurship, career readiness, and a job fair for formerly incarcerated person(over 200 participants attended the events this year). Future plans are to create a 2nd Chance Education and Job Training Center on our site to offer jobs and training to this population in an insulated environment to better prepare them for the world of work.
