“Unfortunately, we were not able to drive semi-trucks loaded with supplies to Puerto Rico as we did for the people of Texas and Florida after hurricanes hit those states,” American Legion National Commander Denise H. Rohan said Tuesday, while touring The American Legion Department of Puerto Rico. “But the people here are every bit as much a part of The American Legion Family. And families take care of each other in time of need.”

American Legion national staff and Department of California Legionnaires are teaming up this week for a district revitalization and veterans outreach effort in Sacramento and Yolo counties. The effort will take place Jan. 18-20 at Yolo American Legion Post 77, 523 Bush Street, Woodland. The hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 18-19 and 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 20. A county veterans service officer will be available both days to assist with Department of Veterans Affairs-related questions and claims.

Membership recruitment and retention is the fifth tactic on the Legion’s strategic membership plan. With 16 million veterans eligible for Legion membership, McQuistion said if someone says no to joining the first time you ask, it’s not a rejection of you or The American Legion. “It’s just that they are not in the proper mindset for that decision. So don’t be afraid to go after them seven to 12 times,” she said.

Six-year U.S. Air Force veteran Myra Hallman, secretary of her Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter at Humboldt State University in northern California, wasn’t sure how she was going to make it to SVA’s 10th national convention Jan. 4-6 in San Antonio. The problem was a lack of available resources. She turned to Arcadia American Legion Post 247. “They heard about our issues with funding, and at a meeting discussed what the options were,” Hallman said Friday after visiting “The Greatest Legislation: An American Legion Centennial Salute to the GI Bill” traveling exhibit at the convention. “They got together and partnered with the local Coast Guard unit, and they were able to rally up some money for a scholarship for myself and one other person.” Now, she adds, “I’m a member of that post.”
