"‘[This] office is an oasis!' said a very distraught woman as she entered our quiet, peaceful Al-Anon office. She was bankrupt, physically, mentally, and emotionally. She dropped onto our comfortable couch and poured out her familiar story of #family #dysfunction brought on by the active #alcoholism in her home. After hearing her story, I shared what #AlAnon was all about, and told her to make herself comfortable. She lay down on the couch and went to sleep. Fortunately, no one came in and the phone did not ring. About forty minutes later, she woke up. I gave her a schedule of #meetings and a newcomer's packet. Off she went no longer quite as #angry, #lonely, and tired as when she came in. Our local Al-Anon office has been an ‘oasis' for those seeking #help and #hope." “An oasis of hope," “The Forum" December 2016 Al-Anon members come together every week for #support and to learn new ways to deal with an #alcoholic #family member or #friend. In the March 2017 issue of Al-Anon's "The Forum" magazine a member shares: “My son was an infant when I committed to attending Al-Anon, and I took him to meetings with me. My three daughters attended with me occasionally, and we went to open Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as well. Issues came and went as they were growing up, and throughout the years, their drinking affected me. As Tradition Three states, ‘the only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of alcoholism in a relative or friend.' It doesn't ask that I define it or give it a score. That was not my role. My role was to continue letting change begin with me by learning healthy behaviors and responses to alcoholism, even when alcohol was not present. After all, it is called alcoholism, not ‘alcoholwasism.'" “What kept me coming back?" “The Forum" March 2017 Al-Anon is for anyone affected by someone else's drinking. Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Paul Schoenfeld, shares: “Al-Anon provides a #community of #family #members who struggle to establish a loving relationship with their ill family member, but at the same time, not to enable their #disease. Parents, brothers, sisters, and #children begin to realize that dependency on #alcohol is not a moral failing or a choice…It's a condition that their loved one lives with." “A father learned in Al-Anon that alcoholism is a family disease," “Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism 2017" " Read this #article by Dr. Schoenfeld, goo.gl/0oq3lW. #AlAnon #Alateen #recovery #alcoholism #alcoholic #alcoholics #drinks #familydisease #relapse #sobriety #support #12Steps #treatment #therapy #addiction #sober #meeting #drug #problems #AlcoholicsAnonymous #AA #friends #trust
