7/21/2017: Further Information From The National Weather Service Regarding The Drift Smoke: • What and Where: Smoke is coming from the Lodgepole Complex fire along the Missouri River in Central Montana. Thursday afternoon the fire grew from 2,500 acres to 32,000 in just a few hours. Latest update this afternoon is 52,000 acres. • Currently: Smoke is across northeast Wyoming and far western South Dakota. Visibility is down to 3 miles across Rapid City. • Forecast: Northwest winds will push smoke into the Badlands and south central South Dakota this afternoon. Smoke should hang around the area through Saturday. A shift in the winds Saturday night into Sunday is expected to clear out the skies.

7/21/2017: Several things going on today....first, we are experiencing heavy drift smoke from a complex of fires in central Montana according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City. Also, we are under a Red Flag Warning today in Weston County for strong winds, low humidity and high temperatures. We have had numerous reports of smoke and been paged to reports of fire in Oil Creek and on Upton Fairview Road. The Fiddler Creek Fire on the Upton Fairview Road was quickly contained and is out at this time. All other reports have been false alarms and there are currently no fires in Weston County. The public is encouraged to remain diligent especially after the lightning last night and be sure to report a fire by calling 911 if you see flames or a specific smoke column.

Weston County Fire Protection District shared US National Weather Service Rapid City South Dakota's post.
We've received some reports of smoke in Wyoming and western South Dakota. This smoke is from a complex of fires in central Montana. Our newest satellite, GOES-16, clearly shows the fires in MT - orange/red hot spots. The smoke plume is a bit harder to see, but it stretches southeastward toward our area. Can expect the smoke to persist and spread through today and into tomorrow.

From The National Weather Service: ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM MDT THIS EVENING FOR GUSTY WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR FAR NORTHEAST WYOMING AND NORTHWEST SOUTH DAKOTA... .DISCUSSION...A "cold" front will move through the area this morning with much drier air behind it. As skies clear this morning, strong sunshine is expected which will enhance the dry air and well as gusty northwest winds. Temperatures will rise to the upper 80s to 103. Minimum relative humidities in the teens will be common with some 20s over central South Dakota. The combination of critically dry fuels, gusty northwest winds, and very dry minimum relative humidities will create critical fire weather conditions for far northeast Wyoming northwest South Dakota late this morning through this afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are possible over central South Dakota late this afternoon and evening. Minimum relative humidities will drop to 15-25% Saturday afternoon with breezy winds. If it looks drier or winds become stronger, critical fire weather conditions may develop.
