Members of the community have been involved with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy from its inception as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization in 1991. From an initial group of five people, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy has grown into a dynamic organization of 7 staff and more than 550 trained volunteer Stewards who have collectively devoted hundreds of thousand of hours of their time to the Preserve with an audited value of Steward services in 2013 alone of $844,000 making the public/private partnership with the City of Scottsdale a national model for conservation.
