World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on March 22. The day focuses attention on the importance of fresh water and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In 1993, the first World Water Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly and since, each year focuses on a different issue.

James Millington was crowned winner of our ‘Protecting our Environment’ Award at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham last week. The ‘Protect the environment’ award was designed to celebrate the entry that showed promise of giving the world more productive, energy efficient and sustainable solutions. James, from Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, Cheshire, designed an ECO brick made of reusable household waste, which would otherwise end up in landfill. The brick will comprise of two major components, the first being an inner core of recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard or other recyclable materials. The outer core would be made out of thermoplastics for example polypropylene and polyethylene which would give the inner core more structural integrity and a high level of water resistance. James wanted to reinvent a brick which would be cost-effective and more sustainable in the future whilst also resolving the landfill situation. His main aims were to: reuse household waste successfully, create a cost-effective brick that can be used in the future in the building trade.
