History of Thompsonville First Baptist Church

On September 23, 1879, eight dedicated Christian men and women met at Thompsonville, Illinois, and with the aid of council representing five area Southern Baptist Churches, organized themselves together in a covenant relationship, adopting the Articles of Faith set forth in the Franklin Baptist Association.

During the 129 year span, progress has been sure but often painful. From quarter time preaching to a full time Pastor, Bi-vocational Associate Pastor and Youth Director, Bi-vocational Music Director and a Secretary. Progress has seen a small frame building to a large brick building.

One of the most painful times was experienced when the white frame church building burned to the ground on June 27, 1938. What followed is an absolute proof of indomitable spirit and a steadfast faith in God that prevaled in this church since its beginning. On April 30, 1939, less than one year later, a new brick building was dedicated. Then on April 30, 1940, another fire gutted the new building. On April 24, 1941, another dedication service was held.

During the past 129 years, the most outstanding characteristics of Thompsonville First Baptist Church has been its desire to serve God and our fellowman, always seeking the leadership of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in whatever we do.

On August 22, 2001, the Church purchased 40 acres on Route 149 at the edge of Thompsonville upon which a new church building will be built. We have already built the pavilion and a clothing center. We thank God for the great and mighty things He will do through His people as we continue to walk by faith and not by sight trusting Him for His marvelous provisions!
