Kutztown Area Transport Service, Inc. (KATS) was founded in 1984 by Becky Rakowiecki to provide non-emergency medical transportation for the Lehigh Valley and Reading area due to a lack of medical transportation providers available. In 1987, KATS absorbed the Kutztown Lions Club Ambulance to handle 911 and emergency services for Kutztown Borough and portions of Albany, Greenwich, Maxatawny, and Richmond townships. Since services began, the company has grown from 14 employees (10 volunteer) and 3 vehicles to over 60 employees and over 30 vehicles.
