The History Museum On The Square
The History Museum on the Square is a private, not-for-profit organization that began in 1975 as a Bicentennial project. We raise all necessary program and operating funds through admissions, gift shop sales, special events, memberships, donations and grants.

Originally housed in downtown Springfield, the History Museum found its first "real" home in the Victorian Bentley House. Then in 1993 the History Museum was moved to Springfield's Historic City Hall. This impressive structure, built in 1894 and used originally as the Customhouse and Post Office, allowed The History Museum to open its first permanent exhibit on this region's history. Titled "Crossroads at the Spring," it tells the local story from the coming of the first people to southwest Missouri 12,000 years ago up to 1957, when Springfield was voted an All-American City.

The museum moved into a transitional space on Springfield's Park Central Square in July of 2012. The historic Barth's building was donated to the museum and is now being renovated, guided by the vision of Casey Architecture of Springfield, Missouri. We are currently located in the adjacent building at 155 Park Central Square and now use for displaying our temporary exhibits and a portion of our permanent exhibit. Most recently we also acquired the amazing Fox Theatre which is two doors east of our current location on Park Central's NE quadrant. We hope to open this historic facility soon. The complete transformation of these three buildings will become our expanded, innovative History Museum on the Square.
