In 2004, SVETN launched Elite Learning, a program providing online courses to high school students of southwestern Virginia. Elite is an acronym for Experience Learning Innovation and Teaching Excellence. Counties currently participating in the Elite Learning program are Smyth, Wythe, Tazewell, Washington, Scott, Dickenson, and the City of Norton. Since 2007, enrollment has grown from 95 to 741 during the current school year. This rapid growth is expected to continue.
The courses offered by Elite Learning are dual-enrollment, meaning students receive both high school and college credit for the same coursework. Classes are asynchronous. That is, students complete coursework at their own high school at a time that fits best with their schedule. These courses are perfect for highly motivated students who plan to use their high school years to get a head-start on their college education. Elite Learning courses are challenging, demanding and exciting!
Classes are taught by highly qualified teachers who have been trained to use online techniques. Instructors are considered community college adjunct professors as they have met the teaching criteria established by the Virginia Community College System. During the 2014-2015 school year, 21 sections of 14 different dual enrollment courses were available to students. All courses will be offered for the 2015-2016 school year as well.
