For more than a decade, the Benedictine monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey have operated Abbey Caskets. Abbey Caskets was established by Saint Meinrad Archabbey in 1999. The handcrafted caskets and cremation urns are made of hardwoods such as poplar, oak, walnut and cherry and are sold directly to the public. We invite you to view the handcrafted caskets and cremation urns on our website. All the proceeds help support the 156-year tradition of this Benedictine monastery. Please contact us if we can help you honor a loved one's life. One of only two archabbeys in the United States, the Benedictine monastery of Saint Meinrad Archabbey was established in 1854 by the Abbey of Einsiedeln in Switzerland. A southern Indiana priest, Fr. Joseph Kundek, asked the Swiss monks to settle here to help minister to the German-speaking Catholic population and to start a seminary that would prepare local men to become priests. In the 150 years since, the monastic community at Saint Meinrad, Indiana has grown to about 110 monks.
