E&J Electric History

E&J Electric was established in 1976 by Elmer Vanomy & John Schmidt. Elmer retired a few years later, but John remains the key part in the business.

E & J currently has ten licensed Journeymen Electricians who serve the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids Corridor areas as well as surrounding areas as a full service electric contractor. E & J can handle all your residential and commercial electrical and communication needs.

E & J offers aerial boom trucks, trenching, plowing, backhoes, and directional boring services. E & J also is fortunate to have many long term customers and looks forward to an opportunity to serve you!

E&J Geothermal History

John Schmidt of E & J started installing Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) over 30 years ago because he wanted a more efficient cost effective way to heat and cool his parents home, his home shop and business. Soon brothers and neighbors joined in and the business grew from there.

Most of John’s beginning knowledge of geothermal came from studies conducted by Oklahoma State. There have been many improvements to the systems over the years; although the systems today are very similar to those first installations.

John has geothermal in his home and new office as well as all of his shops. The geothermal systems have proven to be a low maintenance long life system. Today E & J specializes in the most efficient geothermal systems available; and is constantly researching the best equipment and methods available. E & J will perform all phases of the installation and design in house.
