Here we go...

New update! The Center for Education (formerly Atheneum) is now starting an after school program for grades 7-12 called the "Socrates Club". We will offer a study club for teens to gather and help each other with homework and special projects in a "coffee shop" atmosphere. Kevin Holthaus and assistants will provide homework help, academic enrichment, and guest speakers from the community. We have a beautiful space in the Admiral's Place building on Independence St. next to Fred Meyer on Abbott. We will be open 2:30-6:00pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and students can come and go as they please by signing in and out. Monthly memberships are available-sponsor a student to do homework the fun way! Call 350-1708 for information.

An update on what's new at the Center for Education: Atheneum graduate Michael Barber became the Director of the Alaska Conservation Foundation. He has enlisted Kevin Holthaus to run a salon series of Socratic Seminar discussions with the Executive Directors of many conservation organizations here in Alaska. We use video teleconferencing to open the discussion across the state. We use texts both old and contemporary to help think about visions and missions and charting ways into an unknown future. What would you like our state of Alaska to look like in the future? What can we learn from past efforts in conservation around the world? Have you heard of "ecomodernism"? So far the discussions have been great!

We are excited to announce and let everyone know that Atheneum School is becoming "The Center for Education" where we will offer our future educational programs. Lydia and Kevin have been actively engaged in offering models and methods for improving education at all levels from elementary through graduate school. We have been working with a collaboration between the University of Alaska, the Anchorage School District, and the Anchorage Museum for a large grant to improve teacher education in arts and culture. We have also been teacher training and doing Socratic Seminars at Rogers Park elementary in Anchorage. To extend this kind of work, and include other educational opportunities, we are forming "The Center for Education" as our new umbrella. These programs include classes open to the public like our Learn to Drive, Off-road First and our ongoing Internal Arts, Tai Chi and Ba Gua programs. We offer Socratic Seminars in a variety of formats, from facilitating retreats for Nature Conservation organizations to reading groups open to the general public. Please feel free to contact us if you have an interest in our programs.
