Be aware, it's fire season in Alaska again.
Here's a perfect example of why people need to be extremely careful with any kind of activity that can cause a wildfire right now. The photo below shows the results of a 1-acre fire that occurred at a home on Teresa Drive outside Palmer on Saturday afternoon after a charcoal grill was knocked over by the wind and the hot coals started a grass fire. The fire spread quickly in the windy conditions and the homeowner wasn't able to contain it. Division of Forestry personnel arrived within 7 minutes of the time the fire was reported and were able to knock it down and contain it before it burned the home down. With very little precipitation so far this spring and recent windy weather, the dead grass and brush surrounding homes now is extremely dry and flammable. All it takes is one spark and a slight breeze to create a situation that could be devastating. Conditions will remain this way until we get precipitation and the grass greens up. Please be careful and use extreme caution, whether you're burning debris, using a burn barrel or barbecuing hot dogs. Go to http://forestry.alaska.gov/burn for more information about safe burning practices in Alaska.
