Rainwater runs across roads, driveways, parking lots, rooftops and other surfaces that prevent water from soaking into the ground. This runoff collects in the city's storm drains, then travels directly to our local streams, lakes, wetlands and rivers. This can cause flooding and erosion, and wash away important habitat for wildlife that live in the stream. Rainwater runoff also picks up and carries with it many different pollutants that are found on impervious surfaces such as sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, bacteria, oil and grease, trash pesticides and metals. We, as a civilization, should do our best to prevent this type of pollution. And we can!
